I’ve never liked the gym, I’ve never been sporty; I was always picked last for school teams. I’ve done some running- mostly for my head. But for the last couple years I’ve been working with a personal trainer. (The first few sessions were gifted, otherwise I would never have bothered.) And this post is really about him. Ben Howard. The gym is the least glamorous gym I’ve ever been to. It’s hardcore. Spit and sawdust. Meatheads. Music is heavy, so I block it out. But I don’t think about that anymore. Because Ben is the most extraordinary trainer. A natural body builder world champion, and the most modest, kind, encouraging, funny, emotionally intelligent, supportive, adaptable, articulate, ambitious-for-me, trainer. I had no core, I had no strength, and I’m no body builder— but the work we’ve done here together has had a deep affect on me. I’m so grateful. I want everyone to have a Ben. If I can get stronger, anyone can. It’s small steps, big gains. He’s shown me change is possible. 🙏💚

Our beloved Milo. We are beyond sad to say that he has gone—tragically taken from us on Wednesday evening. He was my first boy cat, the most gentle soul. He was the most beautiful creature in all ways. We are devastated.

BLACK ROCK book launch 15 years ago at Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in London. Such excitement: mixing rum punch for all the guests, alive with hope and sense of a dream fulfilled— shared that night with the great and good. When you publish your first novel it’s easy to think it will all go upwards in a clear direction. But of course it doesn’t. It was a great start. I’ve fallen so many times since then. Thank you to all those who’ve been there on this unpredictable and often perilous writing journey. Somehow, the writing doesn’t stop. This year book number four LOOK AT YOU will take flight. 🙏
